Our Veteran Horse's Home, Vicarage Lane, Upper Swanmore

Since 2010 we have provided a centre for injured and older horses. Located in a quiet and rural setting it has grown to become Helping Hooves flagship site offering a full range of wellbeing activities for people who are also in recovery from illness or injury. We call Vicarage Lane our ‘Horsey Alms House’ – the horses enjoy the petting and attention in return for their board and lodgings!

Here at Vicarage Lane we share the companionship and care of our gentle veteran horses.

We welcome individuals, families and groups.

Activities

Group Activities

Groups or families can join us on a regular or ad-hoc basis to enjoy grooming, feeding and caring for the horses.

Different activities take place through out the year depending on the weather, daylight and what the horses natural needs are. For example, in the Summer horses need protection from the heat and insects more than in the Winter, when they need far more additional feed and rugs on to keep them warm. All year around there is something varied and fun to keep you involved. We always celebrate key events throughout the year so don't forget to also check our 'events' page for details of Valentines, Easter, May Day, August Bank Holiday, Halloween and Christmas Activities!

"Coming here is the highlight of my life, not just my week. I love getting out of town and it feels so good up here." 55 year old stroke survivor living with depression.

One to One Visits

Sometimes people need a little time and space to themselves. We welcome people who want to spend some quiet time with our horses, with a single horse handler and if necessary their personal carer or a friend. Please contact us to chat over individual wishes and needs.

Warmer days are perfect for picnics!

A picnic on the paddock is a great way to relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility of our beautiful location at the foot of the South Downs National Park. Besides gazing at the horses happily grazing (or begging for scraps of your picnic!), you can enjoy watching the robins that nest with us every year as they go about their daily chores, or see the visiting honey bees who keep themselves busy gathering nectar and pollen for their queen.

You are welcome to provide your own picnic as we understand catering needs vary - although if you prefer, we can ask a local delicatessan to provide a lovely spread.

"This reminds me of when we were evacuated to a farm as children during the war. It's brought back some lovely memories." An Age UK Picnic Attendee.
